Document Factory

Document Factory enables you to generate any type of up-to-date, customized specifications documents using Microsoft Word templates. In Word, you can create templates containing fields that correspond to requirement attributes. You can then use Document Factory to populate the template with data from any project. Using filter criteria in the template fields, you can even specify what requirement data is included in the document. Document Factory generates .doc files.

Note: You must have Microsoft Office installed to use Document Factory. The first step in generating a Document Factory document is to create a Microsoft Word template. Templates contain any printable data you want to appear in the document including column headers, labels and page numbers. Templates also contain Document Factory commands, keywords and operators.

You can format your template to create the look you desire including tables of contents, headers and footers and page numbers. You can apply character and paragraph formatting available in Word to the entire template, including the keywords. When the template is complete, you can run Document Factory to populate the template with data from a project. See “Formatting Requirement Texts” topic for more information on non-explicit and explicit text.

Note: Document Factory uses the font specified in the template setup for non-explicit text, but the font specified in Caliber Author for any explicit text. See Formatting Requirement Texts for details on explicit and non-explicit text.
Note: Always use hard returns (Enter) when creating new paragraphs in a template. Document Factory does not recognize soft return (Shift+Enter). If Document Factory outputs have oddities, use the Word Show All Formatting Marks option in the Word Option dialog box to reveal soft return characters.

Document Factory tables are written as the section and table processing has their respective dedicated algorithms. See related section on “Creating Tables in Document Factory”. There are several sample templates included with the product. If installed, they are located at C:\Program Files\Borland\Caliber\Samples (or wherever you installed the application).
